Too Long for Twitter - Chalain

May. 19th, 2008 09:48 am Too Long for Twitter

So the sudo make me a sandwich joke (from xkcd) is part of the meme among my coworkers. I just want to report that I have tried this at home, and it does not work.

chalain: make me a sandwich.
chaliren: no.
chalain: sudo make me a sandwich.
chaliren: Sorry, user chalain is not allowed to execute '/usr/bin/make me a sandwich' as root on chaliren.

If she really said that then she's been married to you for too long.

(But not necessarily long enough...)

It would be worse if she said "chalain is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported."

Not a problem, and sorry if I caused confusion. For what it's worth, my quote is an original twist, but yes it is on an existing meme. I'll understand if that's considered cheating by the mq rules.

Thank you for considering it metaquoteworthy.

Oh, wasn't your fault -- I thought that if it showed up on LJ, it was fair game, but the rules explicitly disallow transcriptions from RL. Thanks for the chuckle!

Maybe this will explain.

If that doesn't do it, throw "sudo" and "unix" at your favorite search engine and poke around until you find something that helps.

If your day can be ruined by a joke you don't get or dislike, then you cannot possibly have any idea what "cool" is, and thus your assertion that this is not "cool" is -- by you, anyway -- entirely unsubstantiatable.

I have a rule: if you troll in my blog, you get deleted. The burden of proof is firmly upon you to be informative, and if it comes down to a tie, you get deleted anyway.

This is the very first exception I have made in my blog to the troll rule, because I find this hilarious.

Thank you for making my day.

This is nowhere near funny to you. Consider:

Question: How many Prolog programmers does it take to change a light bulb.
Answer: No.

Many (not all) Prolog programmers find that insanely hilarious, but it's based on context and one's personal sense of humor. Just because you don't find something funny doesn't mean that others do. Your showing up and making your comment is simply petty and mean.

The correct output would be more like:

make me a sandwich
make: *** No rule to make target `me'. Stop.

Incorrect. If you are not on the wheel, you get an error from sudo. The make command would never be run.

Minor correction to myself: if you are not on the wheel or in the sudoers file or otherwise entitled to run the command 'make' via sudo. :-)

Re: Suprised no one pointed this out

By "on the wheel" I'm assuming you mean "in the wheel group" and that's only applicable if the sudoers file specifies that wheel group members can run sudo.

From:chalain
Date:May 20th, 2008 03:46 am (UTC)

Re: Suprised no one pointed this out

(Link)
Correct.

I am curious, however: if the wheel group isn't in the sudoers file, I've always pronounced that "disabled". Is the wheel group commonly used in any other context?
From:awfief
Date:May 20th, 2008 03:52 am (UTC)

Re: Suprised no one pointed this out

(Link)
What's disabled about it? "wheel" is still a functioning group, and users can still be members of it.

You're correct in that the wheel group is not really commonly used in any other context; however lack of special powers don't make the group disabled. (I'm not actually sure how you would "disable" a group -- you can disable user login by setting their shell to /bin/false, but either a group exists or it doesn't, there's really no disabling about it. Then again, it's been a few years since I was a full-fledged sysadmin, perhaps there's something I missed since then, or back in the day?)
From:chalain
Date:May 20th, 2008 04:08 am (UTC)

Re: Suprised no one pointed this out

(Link)
Well, the wheel group is traditionally used to assist in escalating a user's privilege. Any other use of it, and it's "just a group". This is what I meant by "disabling" the wheel--you can put people in the group, but it doesn't do anything. Semantically, it's not disabled, but from a pragmatic perspective it is.

*shrug* Dunno. Personally, I'd be a little exasperated with a sysadmin who put people on the wheel without a privilege-related reason.

Hmm... you know... having said that, and knowing that geeks have a penchant for cheerful perversity, I am suddenly very confident (in the same way the hero of the horror movie says "it's right behind me, isn't it?") that there must exist a vocal¹ minority who do just that.

I suppose you could also set up a wheel group that wasn't in the sudoers file and still granted extra privilages. If you perhaps chown/chgrp'ed some applications in /usr/sbin so that wheel members could see and run them. This could perhaps even be useful: you could run the sbin app, but you wouldn't be suid when you did it. I'm trying to think what purpose that would serve; perhaps it would allow you to run apachectl to check your config but not actually restart the webserver?²

¹ giggling, mostly; but yes, vocal.

² Aww crap. I just became the "cheerful perversity" guy, didn't I.

Re: Suprised no one pointed this out

I *did not* say "sudo make me a sandwich", I said "make me a sandwich".

In your chat log you said "make me a sandwich", your friend's reply was "no". I was pointing out that response to "make me a sandwich" on a *nix box is usually "make: *** No rule to make target `me'. Stop."

I figured since this was supposed to be nerd humor, some nerd nit-picking would be in order. No one else had stepped up to dish out the nerd nit-picking so I did.

I still think the post was funny.

But I would probably NOT want a partner whose geek quotient was that high. Variety, as they say, is the mustard on your hot dog. Or something like that.
